Funded!!!! We have surpassed the initial funding goal!
over 3 years ago – Wed, Aug 26, 2020 at 04:23:15 PM

We are so so excited - thank you to all you wonderful backers!

Last night we reached our initial funding goal of $15 000 which means that Rebuilding Tomorrow will definitely go ahead! We can't wait to bring this book to you.

In the meantime, we have another 8 days and lots of stretch goals to strive for. When we reach 500 backers, everyone will received an ecopy of Marry Me Mischa McPhee by Kate Gordon. If you've already got a copy of this sweet holiday story, you can gift it to a friend.

At $20 000 we will release and have available an extra enamel pin for you to choose between or add on to your current pledge.

We would really love to be able to deliver an audio version of Rebuilding Tomorrow and we can afford to produce that at $35 000.

Here's to a strong finale week!

Stretch goals, postage and two weeks to go!
over 3 years ago – Tue, Aug 18, 2020 at 07:12:54 PM

Hello lovely backers!

We have just two weeks to go until our Kickstarter campaign comes to a close. We currently sit just past 91% funded. But we don't want to stop just because we're close to the end. We have lots of plans that did not fit into the original funding goal for Rebuilding Tomorrow, but that's what stretch goals are for!

Stretch Goals

  •  $15,000 (AUD) The book is funded! Rebuilding Tomorrow will get made!
  •  $20,000 (AUD) We will reveal a third enamel pin option! We will also plant a tree in Australia for every 10 backers. 🌳
  •  $25,000 (AUD) We will reveal a fourth enamel pin option! At this level of funding we can also afford to make a slightly longer book, giving Tsana more flexibility in choosing stories to include.
  •  $30,000 (AUD) Everyone who backed for a pin, mug or knitted level (or add on) will also get stickers. We will also plant a tree in Australia for every 5 backers. 🌳
  •  $35,000 (AUD) If we reach this level, we will be able to afford to make a professional-quality audiobook of Rebuilding Tomorrow! Which we will distribute to backers at all reward levels! 🎧

Bonuses

  • 500 backers: When we reach 500 backers every backer will receive an ebook copy of Marry Me Mischa McPhee by Kate Gordon. This is a contemporary Christmas-themed queer romance novella, featuring a protagonist with anxiety and a side character who uses a wheelchair.
  •  750 backers ???

Postage

We have become aware that the international postage situation for items other than books is currently a little bit worse than we originally thought. We are examining all possible options and will be back with a more definite update soon.

However, let me emphasise that this does not affect physical copies of the books, which will be sent out from regional printers. So books going to Australia and New Zealand will be printed in and sent from Australia, books for North America will be printed in and sent from the US, etc. We added projected printing delays into our schedule before launching the Kickstarter, so nothing has changed on that front.

What may be affected or delayed are the other physical items, such as pins, mugs and knitteds, that are headed for countries other than Australia. Watch this space for another update.

Meanwhile, on our blog...

We have had a few more contributions from some of our authors. Tsana interviewed Tansy Rayner Roberts about her story, "Kids These Days", which is a sequel to "Did We Break the End of the World?" from Defying Doomsday

Tsana also interviewed Fran Wilde (over Zoom, rather than email, which was a new experience). The transcribed interview on our blog covers disability representation in general, and Fran's Rebuilding Tomorrow story in particular.

A Word from our author Kristy Evangelista
over 3 years ago – Tue, Aug 18, 2020 at 12:32:49 AM

We asked our authors to share a little about their stories in Rebuilding Tomorrow so we could give you all a little sneak peek of what is to come.

Our first author to guest on our Rebuilding Tomorrow blog is Kristy Evangelista. Kristy wrote “No Shit” for Defying Doomsday, about a Brisbane woman with Crohn’s disease who survives an extremely deadly pandemic. Her follow-up story for Rebuilding Tomorrow, is, uh, thematically titled “Merry Shitmas”.

Advance notice we are opening some of the All Gone levels again!
over 3 years ago – Sun, Aug 16, 2020 at 04:54:01 AM

We are 85% of the way to our funding goal!  We are so looking forward to being able to bring this project to fruition. In the next few days we will be updating our page with our stretch goals for beyond that.

Backer Rewards

We are also super excited to give you advance notice that we will be adding a few more spots to some of our All Gone rewards levels. If you missed out on one of these, be sure to be on the Kickstarter page at 12 noon on Saturday August 15 (AWST) when they go live. Not sure on how to adjust your pledge or how to add on etc? Please do get in contact with us (via the page, or social media, or email) - we're standing by to help, ask us anything!

Our Authors

Congratulations to Bogi Takács for winning the Best Fan Writer Hugo this year at Worldcon!

Bogi's story in Rebuilding Tomorrow is set years down the track from when aliens invaded Hungary in "Given Sufficient Desperation", which appeared in Defying Doomsday.  Things are very different now, as you will be able to read about in "The 1st Interspecies Solidarity Fair And Parade".

What else is going on at Twelfth Planet?

Under our crime imprint, Deadlines, we've released The Long Shot by Deborah Sheldon. A dark suspenseful crime novel, with a romance at its core, The Long Shot  explores the aftermath of domestic abuse on children having grown up in a violent household. It deals with its subject matter with care and respect.

After a six-year estrangement from her troubled family, Simone Parker returns home to the small Australian town of Brownbeck to attend a funeral. Now that their violent and abusive father is dead, she hopes to reconcile with her younger sister, Claire.

When Simone is the only witness to a brutal and near-fatal bashing, she discovers that Brownbeck harbours a criminal gang trafficking in illegal firearms. At the funeral, she recognises Claire’s new partner as one of the assailants.

How can she help police officer Mitchell Ross in his investigation if her own sister might be involved?

The Australian Science Fiction Foundation recently announced the 2020 shortlists for the Norma K Hemming Award. Winter's Tale by Nike Sulway and Shauna O'Meara, which we crowdfunded to publish last year, has been shortlisted in the short story category. The Hemming Award recognises excellence in the exploration of themes of race, gender, sexuality, class or disability in a published speculative fiction work. And we'd like to thank our supporters for contributing to our Kickstarter to enable us to bring this gorgeously illustrated in full colour children's book to life.  Winter's Tale is still available for purchase.

Thank you so much for continuing to help us spread the word!

New pin revealed and a future bonus for backers
over 3 years ago – Fri, Aug 07, 2020 at 08:28:14 PM

Hello everyone!

Thank you for backing Rebuilding Tomorrow and for helping spread the word about this project. We are very excited to bring this book to you and we are getting closer to being able to do that by the day!

Today, just six days into the campaign, we passed three-quarters of our funding goal. As I type this we are sitting on 76% funded. Thank you all for your contributions!

When we reached 250, we announced that we would give all backers an ebook copy of Icefall, a novella by Stephanie Gunn. I can now announce that if we reach 500 backers we will also throw in a copy of Marry Me Mischa McPhee by Kate Gordon. This is a contemporary Christmas-themed queer romance novella, featuring a protagonist with anxiety and a side character who uses a wheelchair.

Marry Me Mischa McPhee by Kate Gordon: cover features a coffee cut in the foreground, with a bookshelf in the background and Christmas decorations across the top of the cover.

Today we also revealed that we will have two designs of enamel pin to choose from: the flowerpot and seedling pin, designed by Geneva Bowers, you may have already seen on our Kickstarter page; and a pin of our logo. The logo pin will have a teal background and silver writing — it says "Rebuilding Tomorrow" in the same font as our front cover. The pin and font were both designed by Beau Parsons. Backers will have a choice between these two pins, or can opt to receive both of them, by adding an additional $8 (AUD) to their pledge and selecting both pins in Backerkit after the end of the campaign.

Left: orange flower pot with green seedling representing the enamel pin reward. Right: teal and silver logo pin that reads "Rebuilding Tomorrow".

Meanwhile, we have planned some stretch goals, which we will begin announcing once we reach our funding goal. Please help us get there faster by spreading the word about Rebuilding Tomorrow!
